Engine help
Girls, here are a few simple tips that will keep your car on the road and probably save you a bit of money too.
Check each month
- Oil levels: add oil if below low level mark and check for leaks
- Tyre pressure: add air to correct PSI (pounds per square inch) if low, correct tyre pressure settings which can be found in owner's manual
- Tyres: check for slow punctures, bulges or uneven wear
- Coolant and anti freeze: top up if needed
- Air Filter: replace if worn or dirty
- Exhaust: check the exhaust system is in sound working order
To avoid wasting money on a failed MoT test, regularly check:
- All fluid levels once a month. Make sure your car is parked on a flat surface. Use the dipstick to check the oil level and monitor coolant, check windscreen-washer fluid and brake-fluid levels by checking them against the markers on the side of their respective reservoirs.
- Battery terminal and cables: clean if corroded
- Wiper blades: replace if worn or causing smears
- Inspect headlights/brake lights/indicators
- Inspect brakes for wear and tear
- Check the windscreen for chips and cracks
- Check the horn works properly
- Check spare tyre is fully inflated
- Check all seatbelt buckles work
- Make sure the handbrake will hold the car on a hill
